What I Expect From a Workplace
What I expect from a workplace is simple to say. Everyone gets the same respect, leaders set the standard for how people talk, decisions and agreements hold, and people who lead can do more than ship.
This is what I expect from a workplace. None of it is about perks or job titles.
What I expect from a workplace
Everyone gets the same respect, wherever they live, however junior they are and whatever they’re paid.
The words people use about each other at work matter, and leaders set the standard for them.
A decision stays made until there’s a good reason to change it. I can work with almost any decision, and I’ll disagree and commit. I can’t do good work when it changes every day with nothing new behind it.
What’s been agreed stays agreed, and nobody’s honesty gets questioned without good reason.
Shipping and leading are different skills, and a leader needs both. Someone who only delivers can get a lot done and still leave a lot of people behind.
I look for these before I join a team, and I hold myself to the same list when I lead one.
